Common Patient Questions
How does an oral appliance compare to a CPAP machine for treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
Oral appliances are smaller, quieter, and more comfortable than CPAP machines, making them an excellent option for those who find CPAP difficult to tolerate. While CPAP is often the first-line treatment for moderate to severe OSA, oral appliances are highly effective for mild to moderate cases and for individuals who prefer an alternative to CPAP. And as a bonus, Oral Appliances are much easier to travel with that CPAP devices!
Who is a good candidate for Oral Appliance Therapy?
Oral appliances are best suited for individuals with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea or those with severe OSA who cannot tolerate CPAP therapy. A consultation and airway assessment can determine if an oral appliance is right treatment choice for you.
I gag easily and don’t like impression material. Can I get an oral appliance without goopy molds?
Yes! Our office is fully digital, using advanced 3D scanning technology instead of traditional impressions. This process is highly accurate, detailed, and most importantly it is comfortable - eliminating the need for messy molds.
Will my oral appliance be covered by insurance?
Most medical insurance plans cover CPAP or other PAP therapies as the primary mode of therapy, and coverage for oral appliances varies widely. While we do not bill medical insurances directly for sleep apnea devices, we provide all necessary documentation you need to help you seek reimbursement. If your insurance offers coverage, they will send the reimbursement check directly to you.
How much does an oral appliance cost?
At our practice the cost for consultation and airway assessment is $125.00. If you choose to proceed with obtaining an oral appliance with us, this fee will be applied towards the cost of your device. The price of the appliances varies based on quality, material, and mechanism, and we offer options ranging from $750 to $4,500 depending on the selected device. The fees include all lab fees, titrations, and follow up visits in the first 6 months.
What materials are used in the oral appliances you provide?
All the materials we use are BPA-free, phthalates free, latex free, gluten-free, and free of most common allergens, ensuring safety and comfort for all patients. MSDS (material safety data sheets) are available upon request.
