Consultation and Sleep Test review

Dr. Shafaee takes a patient-centric approach.  She understands that everyone is different and that your treatment needs to address not just your sleep but also needs to fit your lifestyle.  Although CPAP is the golden standard for treatment of most sleep breathing disorders, it unfortunately has many drawbacks.   Dr. Shafaee will review your sleep test results and determine a customized course of treatment for you,

This non-invasive treatment is ideal for patients who prefer an alternative to CPAP therapy or perhaps have mild to moderate sleep apnea.  We work with multiple laboratories and designers to custom create the most comfortable ideal appliance for you. There are currently over 120 different devices on the market - which is best for you?

Snore Guards

These mouthpieces help reduce snoring by slightly tilting the jaw to a position that reduces the “vibrations” in your throat that cause snoring. It's a simple, non-invasive device that is custom-made to fit your dentition.  Since a large subset of individuals with snoring may also have Obstructive Sleep Apnea,  we always recommend consulting with your physician first and obtaining appropriate studies to ensure the snoring is only snoring and not a symptom of a more serious condition.

Bite Splints for Clenching and Grinding (Night Guards)

An Occlusal Guard is a custom-fitted mouthguard that acts as a stabilizing device for your jaw and protects your teeth from the damage caused by clenching or grinding (bruxism). It also reduces muscle and jaw pain associated with nocturnal clenching or grinding during sleep. The use of this type of device will lessens the likelihood of tooth fractures, dislodging fillings and fractured crowns.

Our custom made devices are all fabricated from safe medical grade acrylic that is BPA-free and gluten-free.

Botulinum Toxin (Botox® and Xyomin®) injections for TMJ discomfort)

Botulinum toxin injections are a minimally invasive treatment that can complement traditional TMJ therapies, such as night guards and physical therapy for patients who continue to experience discomfort. By relaxing the overactive muscles responsible for clenching and teeth grinding, these injections can help alleviate symptoms like jaw soreness and headaches. The effects typically last around 3 months, with follow-up treatments needed to maintain relief.

Laser Therapy for TMJ and Muscle Relief

Laser treatment can be an effective option for reducing pain, specifically in patients with TMJ disorders involving the muscles or have jaw tension. The therapy uses low-level laser light to penetrate deep into the tissues, promoting healing and reducing inflammation in the overworked jaw muscles. This process helps increase blood flow and stimulate cell repair, which can lead to pain relief and improved muscle function. Laser therapy is non-invasive and painless. Multiple sessions are necessary (usually 5-8 sessions) depending on the severity of the condition. Laser therapy is generally well-tolerated with minimal side effects..
